Communication Skills Training for Managers – Better Conversations, Stronger Teams

How many workplace problems could be prevented if people communicated more effectively and managers had the confidence to say what needed to be said?

Misunderstandings, tension between colleagues, poor feedback and difficult conversations that never happen can quietly damage morale, teamwork and performance.

At Ultimate Leadership Training, we help managers and teams communicate more effectively, understand different personalities, handle conflict and approach challenging workplace conversations with greater confidence.

Our bespoke training combines practical communication skills, behavioural awareness, real workplace situations and genuine management experience.

Because better communication isn't simply about talking more. It's about understanding, listening and knowing when and how to act.

Is Poor Communication Holding Your Team Back?

Think about the last misunderstanding that caused frustration in your organisation.

Perhaps someone misunderstood an instruction. Perhaps two colleagues disagreed but never discussed the real problem. Or perhaps a manager noticed poor behaviour, decided to avoid an uncomfortable conversation and hoped the situation would improve.

Often, it doesn't.

Small problems become bigger problems. Frustration grows. People make assumptions. Relationships deteriorate and managers spend increasing amounts of time dealing with situations that could have been addressed much earlier.

Sometimes the problem isn't what someone has said. It's what nobody has said.

One difficult conversation handled well today can prevent weeks of misunderstanding, frustration and unnecessary conflict.

The good news is that effective communication and confident workplace conversations are skills people can develop.

That's exactly what our training is designed to help them do.

Do Any of These Workplace Challenges Sound Familiar?

Organisations often approach us because they're experiencing:

  • Managers avoiding difficult conversations with employees.
  • Colleagues who regularly misunderstand one another.
  • Different departments working in silos.
  • Employees who become defensive when receiving feedback.
  • Supervisors who struggle to challenge unacceptable behaviour.
  • Conflict caused by personality or communication differences.
  • Poor listening and assumptions about what others mean.
  • Meetings where people speak but little is agreed or achieved.
  • Managers who communicate too aggressively or too indirectly.
  • Employees who lack confidence speaking up or sharing ideas.
  • Repeated mistakes caused by unclear instructions.
  • A lack of honest, constructive feedback.

These issues can affect organisations of every size and in every industry.

The answer isn't telling everyone to communicate better.

It's helping people understand what good communication looks like, why conversations go wrong and how to handle them differently.

Discuss Your Communication Challenges

What Could Better Workplace Communication Look Like?

Imagine managers who address concerns calmly rather than avoiding them.

Team members who listen to understand, not simply to prepare their response.

People who recognise that colleagues may communicate differently without assuming they're being difficult.

And supervisors who can give honest, constructive feedback without damaging working relationships.

Clearer Communication

Help people express expectations, explain information clearly and check that messages have been understood.

Better Listening

Develop listening skills that reduce assumptions and encourage more useful workplace conversations.

Confident Feedback

Help managers recognise good work, address concerns and explain what needs to change.

Fewer Avoidable Conflicts

Build greater understanding of different perspectives and ways to address disagreements constructively.

Stronger Working Relationships

Help colleagues understand different communication preferences and work more effectively together.

Greater Management Confidence

Give managers practical tools for handling sensitive or challenging conversations professionally.

You don't need to book all these topics. We'll help you focus on the areas that will make the greatest difference to your people.

Understanding Different Personalities and Communication Styles

Have you ever noticed how one person wants a quick, direct answer while someone else prefers more time, explanation and reassurance?

Or how one employee enjoys discussing ideas openly while another prefers to consider the details first?

People don't all communicate in exactly the same way.

Understanding these differences can help managers adapt their approach and reduce avoidable misunderstandings.

How DISC Can Support Better Communication

Where appropriate, our training uses DISC behavioural awareness as a practical tool for exploring communication preferences.

D – Dominance

Often associated with directness, decisiveness and a focus on results.

I – Influence

Often associated with enthusiasm, sociability and open communication.

S – Steadiness

Often associated with patience, cooperation and a preference for stability.

C – Conscientiousness

Often associated with careful thinking, detail and accuracy.

DISC is a framework for encouraging self-awareness and discussion, not a way of putting people into boxes. People are more complex than four behavioural categories.

We use it to explore communication preferences, not to diagnose personality or judge an individual's ability, performance or suitability for a role.

Good communication isn't expecting everyone to communicate like you. It's learning how to communicate effectively with different people.

How Do You Have a Difficult Conversation Without Making Things Worse?

Imagine one of your managers needs to speak to an employee whose work has repeatedly fallen below an agreed standard.

They know the conversation needs to happen, but they're concerned the employee might become defensive, angry or upset.

So they put it off.

Unfortunately, the problem continues, other employees notice and frustration increases.

Our training helps managers prepare and approach situations like this calmly and professionally.

A Practical Five-Step Conversation

  1. Prepare. Be clear about the concern, relevant facts and the outcome you're trying to achieve.
  2. Explain. Describe the situation and its impact without personal criticism or assumptions.
  3. Listen. Ask for the employee's perspective and allow them to explain.
  4. Agree. Clarify expectations, identify support and agree sensible next steps.
  5. Follow up. Check progress, provide feedback and maintain accountability.

This approach doesn't guarantee every conversation will be easy.

But it provides a more structured, respectful way to address workplace challenges.

Formal disciplinary, grievance and other employment matters must also follow the employer's policies and applicable procedures.

During training, we use realistic workplace examples and practical activities to help managers become more comfortable handling these situations.

Communication Training Designed Around Your Organisation

A production supervisor dealing with communication between shifts faces different situations from a customer service manager, engineering team leader or IT department manager.

That's why we don't deliver the same training to everyone without understanding their needs.

Before developing your session, we discuss your organisation, the people attending and the challenges you're looking to address.

1. Understand

We identify your communication challenges, team dynamics and development objectives.

2. Develop

We adapt activities, discussion topics and workplace scenarios to your organisation.

3. Apply

Participants develop practical skills and actions to use in everyday conversations.

Our sessions can include group exercises, behavioural awareness activities, communication challenges, reflection and discussion.

We don't rely on forcing uncomfortable role-play in front of colleagues. Practical learning can take different forms depending on the group's needs.

The goal is meaningful improvement, not simply completing a course.
