Recognise the signs
Not every business performance problem starts with a lack of effort. Sometimes the way people are managed is part of the problem.
Your employees may be capable, your business may have good systems, and everyone may appear busy. Yet the same frustrations keep appearing.
These problems don't automatically mean you have bad managers. Your managers may simply lack clear expectations, practical development, consistent processes or the support they need.
The first step is understanding what's really happening, rather than making assumptions.
More than training
Training can help managers develop valuable skills. But not every management problem can be solved in a training room.
Some organisations need help understanding what's going wrong before deciding what training or support their managers actually need.
For example, poor delegation might be caused by managers lacking confidence. But it could also be linked to unclear responsibilities, inconsistent expectations or a workplace culture where nobody wants to make a mistake.
Providing a delegation course without understanding the cause may only address part of the problem.
That's why we've developed the Management Performance MOT.
Our management performance review helps business owners and senior leaders understand the issues, prioritise improvements and make more informed decisions about management development.
The service explained
The Management Performance MOT is a £495, one-off management effectiveness assessment designed for UK businesses.
It combines our Leadership Gap Scorecard with focused conversations involving the business owner and selected managers.
Rather than producing a lengthy consultancy report full of complicated terminology, we focus on what matters most to your organisation.
We'll identify your three key management improvement priorities, explain why they matter and develop a practical 90-day improvement plan.
A fixed-scope, virtually delivered management assessment. Larger reviews, additional interviews or onsite visits can be quoted separately. VAT applies if chargeable.
A straightforward process
We've designed the review to be practical, straightforward and respectful of your managers' time.
We begin by exploring your business, management structure and biggest concerns. We want to understand what's happening, how often it happens and what you would like to improve.
Selected managers and leaders complete our Leadership Gap Scorecard, examining communication, expectations, accountability, delegation, feedback and other essential management behaviours.
We hold focused virtual conversations to understand the challenges managers face, identify recurring themes and explore whether different parts of the business see the same problems.
We review the findings and identify three management issues that deserve attention. We focus on priorities that are relevant, manageable and capable of being addressed.
You'll receive practical recommendations, suggested actions, responsibilities, milestones and ways to review progress. We then discuss the findings with you.
Management feedback is handled carefully. The business report uses broad themes and appropriate summaries rather than unnecessarily identifying individuals or disclosing private comments.
What we look at
Every organisation has different challenges, but our management review explores the core behaviours that influence everyday performance.
Are expectations explained clearly? Do managers listen, give useful feedback and keep people informed?
Do managers take ownership of results, follow up on commitments and address performance consistently?
Are managers developing their people and sharing responsibility, or trying to do everything themselves?
Are standards clear? Is poor performance addressed early, fairly and constructively?
Do managers have the skills and confidence to make decisions, support employees and handle difficult situations?
Have managers been prepared to lead people? Do they receive the support needed to keep improving?
We also consider relevant operational issues, including communication between departments, inconsistent standards, repeated problems and the demands placed on senior managers.
What you'll take away
The main outcome is clarity: a better understanding of your management challenges and a sensible plan for improvement.
Understand where management is working effectively and where support or change may be needed.
Move away from trying to fix everything at once and concentrate on the issues that deserve attention first.
Receive clear suggested actions, timeframes, responsibilities and ways to check progress.
Recognise gaps between how management is intended to work and what people actually experience.
Identify whether your next step should involve training, coaching, better processes or ongoing support.
Benefit from practical guidance from an experienced manager who understands operational pressures.
The MOT is a diagnostic and action-planning service, not a guarantee of financial savings or improved business results. Actual improvements depend on the actions taken after the review.
A practical illustration
Imagine a business where supervisors regularly pass routine decisions to the owner, employees are unclear about responsibilities and agreed actions are not consistently followed through.
Our review might identify management accountability as a priority. The improvement plan could look something like this:
Agree who is responsible for key decisions, define expectations and introduce a simple action tracker.
Introduce short management reviews, strengthen delegation and help managers take greater ownership.
Check completed actions, review recurring issues and identify any further development needs.
This is an illustrative example of the planning approach, not a claim about a particular client. Your actual plan will be based on your business.
Who we help
The Management Performance MOT is particularly useful for businesses with supervisors, team leaders and managers who influence operational performance.
If you're still making too many day-to-day decisions or repeatedly stepping in to resolve management problems, the review can help identify where responsibilities and management practices need strengthening.
If inconsistent supervision, communication problems or weak accountability are creating frustration, our management effectiveness assessment can help identify priorities.
If you're deciding where to invest in management development, the MOT offers a structured starting point to identify relevant skills gaps and support needs.
Technically capable employees don't automatically become confident people managers when promoted. We help organisations understand the management challenges affecting their supervisors and frontline leaders.
Where service standards, employee engagement, communication and consistent supervision are important, the review can highlight areas requiring improvement.
As businesses grow, informal management arrangements can become less effective. Our review helps owners identify where clearer responsibilities and stronger management capability may be needed.
Sometimes the best time to assess your managers is before small frustrations become expensive problems.

Real management experience
There's a difference between understanding management theory and knowing what it's like to manage real people under real pressure.
I'm Adrian Close, Director of Learning at Ultimate Leadership Training.
I've spent much of my career managing businesses, developing people and being accountable for operational performance.
I've directly managed teams of up to 60 employees and held wider management responsibility across operations involving approximately 1,000 people.
I understand the challenges of maintaining standards, developing managers, dealing with difficult conversations, controlling costs and keeping a business performing when pressures are high.
Today, I work with businesses across manufacturing, engineering, hospitality, IT and other industries to help managers become more capable, confident and accountable.
My approach is practical and straightforward. I'm not interested in producing a report full of complicated management jargon.
I'm interested in helping you understand what's happening in your business and what can realistically be improved.
Because good management isn't simply about knowing what to do. It's about doing the right things consistently.

A management performance assessment reviews how effectively managers lead people, communicate expectations, delegate, address performance and maintain accountability. It helps an organisation identify strengths, management gaps and priorities for improvement.
The standard Management Performance MOT costs £495 per business. This includes the defined virtual assessment, selected management conversations, written findings, three improvement priorities and a practical 90-day action plan. VAT applies if chargeable.
The free Leadership Gap Scorecard is a self-assessment that helps you recognise potential leadership gaps. The paid MOT includes independent analysis, focused conversations with relevant people, prioritised findings and a tailored improvement plan.
The purpose is to identify management practices and development needs, not to label or criticise individual people. Findings are handled with appropriate confidentiality and focus on practical opportunities for improvement.
