Slater Gordon: Developing Better Managers and Delivering Real Results

What happens when a growing organisation recognises that its managers have different levels of experience, confidence and leadership ability?

For Slater Gordon Solutions Motor, the answer was to invest in a structured leadership and management development programme that would build confidence, improve management standards and help managers become more effective in their everyday roles.

But this wasn't about simply attending training courses. It was about changing management behaviours, developing practical skills and making measurable improvements back in the workplace.

And the results included one manager saving two hours every working day and earning a promotion halfway through the programme.

The Business Challenge

Growing Businesses Need Managers Who Can Grow With Them

Slater Gordon Solutions Motor had experienced business growth and mergers, creating an ongoing need to recruit and develop people across different levels of the organisation.

The business recognised the importance of developing its own employees into supervisors, team leaders and managers.

However, within its Blackpool contact centre, managers and team leaders had reached different levels of management knowledge, skills and practical experience.

Although coaching, mentoring and training had already taken place, there was a need for a more structured and joined-up approach.

The Question Was Simple

How do you develop managers with different abilities and experiences while creating consistent standards of leadership throughout the organisation?

The development programme needed to address several important challenges.

Build Management Confidence

Help managers feel more capable and confident when dealing with everyday leadership challenges.

Develop Existing Skills

Recognise the strengths of experienced managers while helping them learn and apply new skills.

Support New Managers

Help recently appointed managers develop the skills and knowledge of their more experienced colleagues.

Improve Management Standards

Address unhelpful management habits and establish more consistent standards of good practice.

Our Approach

A Bespoke 12-Month Leadership and Management Development Programme

At Ultimate Leadership Training, we believe that effective management development starts with understanding the organisation, its people and the challenges they face.

The first step was a detailed discussion with the HR Manager at Slater Gordon Solutions Motor.

Rather than recommending a standard off-the-shelf training course, we explored different solutions and worked collaboratively to develop an approach suited to the organisation.

The agreed solution was a bespoke 12-month, action-focused leadership and management development programme, with the organisation's core values at its heart.

Why 12 Months?

Management behaviours rarely change simply because someone attends a workshop. Real development requires time to learn, practise, reflect and improve.

The programme was designed to give managers regular opportunities to develop their knowledge and apply what they had learnt in the workplace.

Putting Learning Into Practice

Training That Continued Beyond the Classroom

The programme consisted of one classroom-based training day each month, with managers attending together.

Across the 12 sessions, managers developed competencies required for effective leadership and people management.

Importantly, the programme included a practical accountability process, helping participants turn new knowledge into everyday management action.

  1. Understand the business. Agree the management development needs and align the programme with the organisation's values.
  2. Develop practical skills. Deliver monthly training sessions designed around effective leadership and management competencies.
  3. Commit to action. At the end of each session, participants establish practical goals to complete in the workplace.
  4. Review progress. At the beginning of the next session, review the previous month's goals and the progress made.
  5. Evaluate development. At the end of the 12-month programme, review the goals and achievements across the programme.

This approach helped connect leadership development with the managers' real responsibilities rather than treating training as an isolated event.

The Results

What Difference Did the Leadership Training Make?

The feedback from the programme was extremely positive.

Managers reported developing a better understanding of leadership, communication, motivation, emotional control and managing change.

One particularly encouraging example demonstrated how practical management development can translate into valuable workplace improvements.

2 Hours Saved Per Day

One manager reported saving two hours every working day and was promoted halfway through the programme as a direct result of her work.

This was an individual result reported in the case study, rather than an average saving across all participants.

The programme also received very positive feedback from the HR Manager, and further training sessions were booked.

Participant Feedback

What the Managers Said About Their Development

Alongside the reported workplace improvements, participants shared positive feedback about what they had learnt.

"I've gained a real insight into the difference between leading and managing and how to motivate my team"
"I've gained valuable learning in how to inspire my team and communicate the vision of the company".
"I now understand how to control my emotions better".
"I now have a process for managing change and planning"
"Really enjoyed the training, great trainer, interactive and relevant"
"Great course and content"

What Other Businesses Can Learn

Why Leadership Development Needs More Than a Training Day

Many organisations face similar management development challenges.

An experienced employee is promoted into management because they are good at their job. Another manager has been leading people for years but has received very little formal development.

Meanwhile, different departments develop different management habits, communication styles and expectations.

The result can be inconsistent management standards, unclear accountability and employees experiencing very different approaches to leadership.

The Slater Gordon case study demonstrates the value of a structured approach that combines practical development with workplace action and regular accountability.

Three Important Lessons

1. Start With the Business Need

Effective management development should address real workplace challenges rather than simply covering a standard list of topics.

2. Make Learning Action-Focused

Managers need opportunities to apply new skills in real situations and review what happens afterwards.

3. Keep Developing Your Managers

Ongoing learning, accountability and support can help managers build confidence and improve their everyday performance.

4. Review the Results

Workplace improvements, manager feedback and development progress help demonstrate the value of management training.
