Communication skills for teens

Communication skills for teens and adults is one of those obvious life skills that so many people get wrong probably because the person’s emotion takes over.

I have two children, one boy and one girl. At the time of writing this page my son has left home starting a great career and next step of his adventure. My daughter is in her late teens, leaving home next year to take the next step in her furture - and yes, we survived? (And so did they)!

I think the trick is to start the communication from day one, which we did. This way the teen knows no difference when they are teens. We had rules about sitting at the table and not having any gadgets during certain times of the day, and then we'd talk - about anything, and they knew that we would discuss anything, without embarrassment or judging.

Some people would find some of the conversations awkward and difficult and this is where the adult needs to learn to communicate more effectively. Questions about sex, in a restaurant are highly inappropriate, but in the confines of your own home when sitting around the table are highly educational. We've discussed sex, bullying, racism, careers, issues at school, the news etc and it's worked for us. They are both very focused and rounded individuals.

How well do you know your teens? Have you heard of Psychometric testing?

Psychometric testing isn't a new thing but it helped us and our Communication skills for teens. It helps to identify 4 very different behaviour types:

  • Dominance, who prefer to tell
  • Influence, who prefer to talk
  • Steady, who prefer to listen
  • Conformity, who prefer to read

The benefit of the DISC profile test is that it accurately works out everyone's consistent characteristics and their preferred style of communication. It also highlights why certain behaviours don't get on.

My teens completed one because they were interested to see how they differed from their mates and I advise you to do the same.

I have written an eBook which is £24.99 and in it you'll find a DISC test paper for your teens and you to complete and compare. it makes for a great discuss around the table but be careful emotions don't take over.
